Where to surf in Saint-Jean-de-Luz?
Sainte Barbe is located north of the seawall of the same name, offering a slow right-hand wave often taken by foil surfers, SUPs, and longboarders.
La Bougie
To the south, in Socoa, this spot offers an easily accessible left and right peak and is offshore in west winds.
It is therefore very popular when working and accessible to all levels.
Mayarco
South of Guéthary and north of Lafiténia lies the picturesque beach of Mayarco.
A medium wave forms in a west/northwest swell.
It tends to close out quickly and lacks power.
However, the place is ideal for beginners with relaxed surfing in a beautiful environment.
There is a short walk to the beach. When you first set eyes on the site, you are amazed by the beauty of the landscape.
For surfing, you are unlikely to find the best waves of your trip, but the setting is worth it.
If you are looking for a beach to spend a sunny afternoon with friends and a bit of surfing, Mayarco is perfect for that.
To get there, head towards Acotz and follow the Route des Plages to the Tamaris Plage campsite overlooking it. There is parking along the road behind the beach.
The Bibam Restaurant Bar, with a view of the beach, makes excellent hamburgers and cocktails.
Lafiténia
If you surf regularly and dream of a long right-hand wave for linking long carves and other maneuvers, Lafiténia is a must.
It is a renowned wave, considered one of the most beautiful rights in Europe.
It works best with a west or north swell and a south wind. When the conditions are right, you can enjoy long waves with nice sections that allow for vertical tricks and good turns.
The main drawback of this spot is its high attendance.
At lunchtime and at the end of the day, surfers from the Quiksilver Europe Headquarters flock to the spot.
To get there, park in the Route des Plages parking lot and follow the descent.
Erromardie
South of Lafiténia, Erromardie beach is frequented by tourists and surfers from nearby campsites.
It is a beautiful beach, quiet off-season, and bordered by many parking areas.
With a sandy and rocky bottom, the spot reveals a long left starting at the southern end of the bay to the central section of the beach, suitable for all levels.
When conditions are favorable, at the northern end of the bay, there is a point break that can produce huge rights. Beware, this is not a wave for beginners!
